The unconventional and innovative literary art is one of the distinguishing features of the 20th century American short stories, which reflects to a great extent the universal artistic features of the modernism works. The present paper attempts to survey this feature and explore in greater detail how symbols are employed in the 20th American short stories such as those by Faulkner, Hemingway and Anderson.
