The Function of Hainan's Old Genealogical Table and the Ungovernmental Standing in the Compiling of the New One

谱牒是一个家族的生命史。海南谱牒以本族源流为先导 ,以世系图表为核心 ,着重记述了始迁祖以降的族脉延续。旧谱牒有着以族田等经济手段维系族众、以家法族规与国法互为补充等功能 ;新谱牒则呈现着内源性确证和族史考辨的个体写作实践与民间立场。

Genealogial table is the life story of a family. The genealogical table in Hainan, which originated from the development of its native clan and is centred by its own genealogica tree, mainly informs us of the familial continuation ever since the arrival of the earliest ancestor in Hainan. The old genealogical tree had the function of uniting the family members by means of clan fields,domestic discipline and clan rules, which were supplemented by the national laws; the new genealogical table is characterized by its internal confirmation, individual writing of and textual research into the clan history, and the ungovernmental standing as well.
