Ethyl acetoacetate, as starting material, was combined with triethyl orthoformate in the presence of acetic anhydride to give ethyl α-ethoxymethyleneacetoa- cetate(2). 2 was cyclized with hydroxylamine and sodium acetate to give ethyl - 5 -methyl-4-isoxazolecarboxylate (3),which is hydrolyzed with acetic acidiand hydrochloric acid to give 5 -methyl- 4-isoxazolecarboxylic acid (4), which reacted with thionyl chloride in benzene solvent to give title compound with overall yield of 30% and 99% content.
