Objective To determine the differences of the fusion progresses of the epiphysis of the metacarpal-phalangeal bone in children between urban and rural areas. Methods A total of 1 260 healthy children, aged 10~18 years old, from Harbin and Chang Fa countryside,Hailun county,Heilongjiang province, were radiographed on the left hand and wrist. There are 35 samples in each gender-age group.Their skeletal maturity was estimated and their sexual development was surveyed. The degrees of the fusion of the epiphysis of the metacarpal-phalangeal bone were measured by five stages. Results It is obvious that the samples of the fusion of epiphysis of all metacarpal-phalangeal bone were rare in 14 years old male group and 12 years old female group in urban area,in 15 years old male group and 13 years old female group in rural area. The ages of 50 percent fusion of the epiphysis are 15~16,13~14 years old in urban male and female respectively,16~17 and 14~15 years old in rural male and female respectively. When the samples are over 17 years old in male and 16 years old in female in urban areas,18 years old in male and 17 years old in female in rural area, the epiphysis fused completely. There are close relationship between sexual maturity and skeletal maturation in timing. Conclusions The differences in the fusion progresses of the epiphysis of metacarpal-phalangeal bone between urban and rural was existed. The results showed that the maturity of metacarpal-phalangeal bone in urban area advanced one year than those in rural area.
