As the First Prize wining project of' 2001 CNFA China Furniture Design Award', Lotus Chair is one of the results of Parametric Computer-Aided Design of Furniture (PCADF) technology application. Details of PCADF were discussed in Analysis on PCAD of Chair Designing, another
article published in the Vol.4 of 2001 this Mag., and this one is the extension, mainly on the application and a case study.
The image of Lotus Chair occurred to me as an ancient Chinese poem came into my vision, which says 'Out of blue water comes lotus flower, natural and pure.' Simple is its first-glance impression and a sense of melody is indicated through its curvaceous layout. Consisting of basic units, standard fasteners and modular tubes, Lotus Chair has mainly 3 component varieties: the support, the brace and the backrest. Supports are made of laminated bend wood in the shape of human seating position; the material of the backrest is frosted acrylic, which
boasts of its resilience and semi-opaque. These two components are joined together with a steel brace. Every single unit is structured in this way. Curvaceous or linear steel tubes join these units together by standard quick fasteners and thus form the various layout of the chair. Lotus Chair is a most flexible design and its simple construction facilitates the application of PCAD technology, including er-gonomically parametric design, strength testing and layout choices according to the dimensions of spaces. Cushions with various colors can be optionally attached to make the chair lovelier.
