A Functional Analysis of Register and Its Relations to the Variables in Discourse

根据社会语言学和功能语言学的研究,语域理论尤其是它的三个变项的属性、功能和应用范围决定了它在语篇分析中的重要性。同时,语域与语场、语旨和语式之间也有着密切关系,所以,只有把言内语境和言外语境分析结合起来,才能得到语篇的“语境意义”。

According to the research of sociolinguistics and functional linguistics,registral theory,especially the attributes of its three variables, its functions and scope of application determine its significance in discourse analysis. Meanwhile, register is also closely related to field, tenor and mode.Thus,the contextual meaning of a discourse can be arrived at only in the combination of internal and external linguistic analysis.
