The cellulose xanthate is prepared by immersing the filter paper successively in 100g·L -1 NaOH solution and carbon disulfide. The filter paper is then washed with distilled water until it is neutral, and finally dried at 50℃. The copper(Ⅱ) is desorbed from the plant leaves by stripping with acidified water. An aliquot of the sample solution is taken and Cu(Ⅱ) is adsorbed on a piece of the cellulose xanthate on which a stable yellow chelate is formed. The absorbance of this yellow chelate is determined at 400nm with the 721 spectrophotometer. Its detection limit is 6.4μg·L -1 . RSD′s obtained are less than 3%. Zinc (Zn 2+ ), Fe 2+ , Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ do not interfere with the determination.
