The characteristics of translocation-accumulation and distribution in soil profile about trace elements (Cu, Co, Pb, Cd, Be, As, Cr, Li, Zn, Sr, Zr, Mn, Ni and Hg)in the soils of both Guangdong and Hainan Provinces have been studied in this paper. The following conclusions have been reached.1. Intensive leaching of trace elements is the main characteristic in weathering stage. In all kinds of soil trace elements are badly leached except red limestone soil in which intensive accumulation of trace elements occurs. The order of leaching intensity is: iron lateritic soil, red earth, yellow soil, purple soil, lateritic red soil and finally red limestone soil.2. During the soil-forming stage the translocation-accumulation of trace elements is weak and tend to leaching. The order of decrease of leaching intensity is: dry red soil, paddy earth, purple soil, red limestone soil, silica latertic soil, lateritic red soil, iron lateritic soil, yellow soil and red earth.3. Leaching action is very intensive and biological action is evident in the soil profiles, where characteristics of washing-illuviation are shown because of the actions of the alternate dry and wet seasons. The relation between translocation-accumulation of trace elements and their content in soil has also been discussed. The fact that the content of trace elements in some kinds of soil is close to a value range though they differ greatly in relative parent materials is considered to be connected with the biological absorption of trace elements. Finally, the authors believe that the leaching power of trace elements of mountain soils in the tropics is higher than that in the subtropics.
