Objective To compare the protective effect of lidocaine with propofol on the peroxidative injured red blood cell(RBC).Methods Intravenous blood samples taken from 20 healthy adults were prepared for 25% RBC suspensions and divided equally into 8 groups:group Ⅰ for control, group Ⅱ with H 2O 2 induced injury and group Ⅲ,Ⅳ,Ⅴ with the same injury as the group Ⅱ after being pretreated with 3 different concentrations of lidocaine (0 01,0 02,0 03mg/ml) respectively and group Ⅵ,Ⅶ,Ⅷ with the same injury as the group Ⅱ after being pretreated with 3 different concentrations of propofol (4 45,8 9,13 35μg/ml)respectively.The concentrations of potassium and malondialdehyde (MDA) in RBC suspensions and hemolytic degree after incubation were measured respectively.Result After 60min incubation, the extracellular potassium concentrations (0 39,0 44,0 35ppm),MDA concentrations(7 09,6 49,5 98nmol/L) and hemolytic degree (87 04%,83 49%,87 51%)in lidocaine groups and the extracellular potassium concentrations (0 30,0 28,0 27ppm),MDA concentrations(5 66,5 57,6 20nmol/L)and hemolytic degree (76 89%,59 84%,64 22%)in propofol groups were decreased significantly as compared with the group Ⅱ (0 51 ppm,9 19nmol/L and 100 00%),which was more significantly in propofol groups than that in lidocaine groups. After 90 min incubation, the extracellular potassium concentrations (1 66,1 64,1 53ppm)in lidocaine groups and (0 71,0 65,0 62ppm) in propofol groups were decreased significantly as compared with the group Ⅱ (2 20ppm),which was more significantly in propofol groups than that in lidocaine groups. Conclusion The protective effect of propofol on the peroxidative injured erythrocyte is stronger than that of lidocaine.
