The changes that have taken place over the last 50 years conceming the paper making process are briefly discussed.This is followed by comments on challenges and opportunities now facing the paper industry.The future requirements of paper and in particlar its surface characteristics are outlined with comments on related developments in surface treatment including coating.The concept of the compact paper machine that could meet some of the future needs of the paper industry is discussed and described.
