This review introduced vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) family members and their receptors, factors influencing VEGF expression, and VEGF signal transduction, with the emphasis on mechanism of VEGF-induced angiogenesis, current status of experimental and clinical study concerning VEGF in therapeutic angiogenesis, problems to be resolved and its future. In addition, we also reviewed VEGF's roles other than angiogenesis.
