In Chinese contemporary film directors, ZHANG Yi mou may be rated as a master of star making.An actress who cooperates with him can always become a famous star.It is a considerable phenomenon of chinese contemporary film culture.And there are two interesting distinguishing features of it.The first is that he is more good at making female stars.For the second,these stars always have poor box office appeal although they are very well known.The auther in this paper discusses it mainly from three angles: the trend of the contemporary popular spirit,the feminist tendentiousness of ZHANG′s films,and the recognition obstacles of the public to ZHANG′s films.
