The activities of sulfur and oxygen in hot metal in equilbrium with MgS, MgO and magnesium vapor have been calculated by thermodynamics data. When magnesium and lime are added simultaneously into hot metal, the capability of desulphurization for hot metal can be increased. Nitrogen as carrier gas can react with Mg to form Mg 3N 2,but it may take part in the reactions of desulphurization and deoxidation at high temperature.
