As the biological responses that indicate deleterious effects of pollutants in the environment, biomarkers can be classified three types. The definition, characteristic and the advantages of biomarker methods are described and its current applications to rapid detemunation and toxicity assessment of pollutants are reviewed in this paper. The disadvantages of biomarkers and the future prospects are discussed as well.
