The raw materials for oleochemicals are animal and plant origin oils and fats.Many derivatives are made from these chemicals but the primary end-uses are in soap,detergents,shampoos etc.where the unique properties of oleochemicals provide the basis for a wide range of surfactant materials.In most instances a further conversion of the basic oleochemical to a derivative is needed before inclusion the end products.One important aspect of oleochemicals,whether derived from natural materials or petroleum is that they are all biodegradable.The only real difference in environmental friendliness is that nature based oleochemical raw materials are renewable whilst petroleum based materials are not.The economics of oleochemical production is highly erratic,the two major variables the price of oils and fats and the value of co-product glycerin vary widely on a supply/demand basis.
