Although historically the development of surface active agents has been driven mainly by househould detergents,nondetergent applications did play a major role in shaping the surfactant market of today.The importance of this contribution should not be measured only in terms of volume or value,but ought to be valued particularely because of its innovative contribution to colloid chemical and because of the improvements in the quality of our lives it enabled to achieve.Applied research has enabled the potential from theories,from chemistry and from process engineering to transfer into useful,practical,valued added realizations.As we enter the new century,there is little doubt that the non-detergent markets and applied research will continue to play a key role.This paper addresses some of the achievements that have been made possible by the application chemists,and attempts to highlight the many opportunities to be exploited yet .
