The paper gives a review on the use of sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) and eutrophication, and the evolution of detergent builders from sodium tripolyphosphate(STPP) to zeolite 4A, and most recently to δ\|layered sodium silicate. Trends in detergent formulation and issues related to environment impact of detergent builders are discussed.\;
