An animal model of multiple organ damage after experimental sepsis was created by cecal punctures after its ligation in rats. 20 hours after cecal ligation, morphological and functional changes in the abdominal viscera in varying degrees appeared. Superficial blood flow in the abdominal viscera was measured by means of Laser Doppler Flowmeter. Results indicated that in the septic group, the microcirculation perfusion in spleen, kidney, small intestine and tail significantly decreased (P<0.01 or 0.05) but nor in the liver. The authors suggested that this was an animal model of multiple organ failure (MOF) in early stage and the disturbance of microcirculation perfusion in the abdominal viscera was one of the mechanisms in pathogenesis of MOF.
