Technical developments in the design of pressure vessels in European and USA were presented, which included the adjustment of material design factor in ASME boiler and pressure vessel code section VIII division 1, a brief introduction of ASME boiler and pressure vessel code section VIII division 3, adoption of flat steel ribbon wound pressure vessels in ASME boiler and pressure vessel code section VIII division 1 and division 2, an introduction of European pressure equipment directive, and some ongoing research projects conducted by the Pressure Vessel Research Council and the European Pressure Equipment Research Council respectively.
