《庭院里的女人》是第一部由中国人担任独立制片人的好莱坞电影,这是继《大地》、《龙种》之后又一部根据赛珍珠的小说改编的电影。在小说《群芳亭》中,赛珍珠关注中国妇女在家庭中的地位,并通过吴太太和安德鲁之间的心灵交流,探讨跨文化交际成功的可能性。《庭院里的女人》在精神上与原著已经大异其趣。影片模仿好莱坞影片制作,潦草地表现吴太太和安德鲁之间的爱情;同时,影片充斥着说教的声音,小说中的圣人安德鲁成了完美的救世主和舍生忘死的英雄;而且,在相当的程度上,影片试图迎合大众的口味,满足某些西方人对中国文化中的糟粕的不健康的窥探欲。凡此种种,对赛珍珠的小说是一种歪曲,并构成负面的影响,也不利于中国文化在世界的传播。
Pavilion of Women is the first Hollywood film made in China by a Chinese cast,and it is another film after The Good Earth and Dragon Seed that is adapted from Pearl Buck's novel.In the novel Pearl Buck shows great concern for Chinese women's fate and probes into the possibility of cross-cultural communicat through the mental contact between Madame Wu and Andre. The film is, however,greatly different from the novel in its essence.It imitates Hollywood film- making and crudely manipulates the love between Madame Wu and Andre,and it is didactical;besides the saint Andre becomes the perfect savior and a selfless and fearless hero.To a great extent,the film tries to satisfy the unhealthy prying desire for undesirable aspects of Chinese culture on the part of some Westerners.All these put together are very unfavorable for the spread of Chinese culture in the world and are distortions of Pearl Buck's novel.
