A Tentative Analysis of Liu Yizheng's Views on Chinese & Western Cultures

柳诒徵是我国现代著名的历史学家。个人经历和时代背景促使其中西文化观的形成。他认为中国文化重伦理道德与德治，中国史学有正史体例，以儒术为主导，而且因有史官制度而具有政治性；西方文化重个人主义、功利主义及法治，西方史学远逊于中国。其中西文化现主观上试图从学理上抗拒新文化运动的激进，客观上对今人了解西方文化和弘扬中国传统文化有指导和借鉴意义。

Liu Yizheng is a famous modern China Historian.Personal experiences and historical backgrounds help to form his views on Chinese and Western cultures.In his opinion,Chinese culture stresses ethics and rule by ethics, and Chinese historiography has history books in biographical style, takes Confucianism as its guidance and is politically oriented with the System of historiography Western culture emphasizes individualism, utlitarianism and rule by law,and Western historiography pales beside its Chinese counterpart.Through scientific principles,he attempted to resist the radical New Cultural Movement,and his opinions are still illuminating to people in understanding Western culture and carrying forward the traditional Chinese culture.
