Levels in the Creation of Artistic Conception by Zong Baihua:An Interpretation

宗白华把意境的创构分为三层。第一层“直观感象的模写”即主体心灵对客观对象的反映 ,注重“动象”的表现 ,是主“实”的。第二层“活跃生命的传达”是一个虚实交融的境界 ,更注重虚境所产生的审美价值和功用。在第三层“最高灵境的启示”中 ,他将中国传统意境理论提升到人生的境界 ,这就指归于一个更高层次的“实”了。

Mr. Zong Baihua divides the creation of artistic conception into three levels: The first level is the 'description of directly perceived phenomena', namely, the description of the reflection of objective matter on subjective mind, paying attention to the expression of 'dynamic phenomena'. It emphasizes reality. The second level is the 'transmission of active life'. It is a realm of the fusion of reality with idealism, paying special attention to the aesthetic value and real function produced by the idealistic realm. In his third level of the 'inspiration of the highest level of spiritual realm', Mr. Zong Baihua raises China's traditional theory of artistic conception to the realm of human life. This level directs at and belongs to a still higher level of 'reality'.
