This paper describes the concept, research direction and methodo-logy of multipurpose tree species research with emphasis on speciesselection, tree improvement and the methods of evaluation. Some evaluatingmethods such as MPTS, standard procedure of OFI, harvest and bioeco-nomics are discussed. New developments in researches of MPTS in theworld are also reviewed.
