Conceptualisation and treatment of koro in traditional Chinese medicine

Koro (Suk-yeong) was a well defined disease entity in early Chinese medicine.It was classified into twotypes:the cold-lingering liver type and the cold kidney insufficiency type.Different combinations of herbal medicine were usedto treat the two types.Acupuncture was also used for the cold kidney insufficiency type.There was also a folk remedy usingchili soup,but this treatment was not supported by authentic Chinese medicine.Four cases of koro,one child,an old manand two women,are presented in detail to illustrate the traditional Chinese theory and conceptualisation of the disease.
