From January 1998 to January 2001,the Department of Female Sexual Disorders in this hospital conducted arandom sample survey of 3000 female outpatients aged 18-55.By questionnaires and statistical analysis of clinical data,14.5% of them were found to have had sexual dysfunction before. The percentage went up to 90.7% when they contractedsexually transmitted diseases (STD),of whom 50.8% had orgasmic dysfunction,34.56% had frigidity and arousal difficulty, and 5.34% had other disorders.Besides, the rate of diabetes mellitus rose to 5.3% and that of mental diseases reached8.97%,suggesting that STD can not only cause the rapid increase in incidence of sexual dysfunction but also lead to the risein diabetes mellitus and mental diseases. Affected and bound by common absurd sexual concepts of feudal tradition for thousands of years,Chinese women havebeen passive in sexual behavior and not free in sexual attitude.Especially, the serious consequences of mental and somatic im-pairment due to STD account for female sexual dysfunction which are not uncommon in clinics.Unlike the publicity of men'simpotence and premature ejaculation, the publicity of women's frigidity, sexual arousal difficulty and orgasmic dysfunction isnearly in a confined condition.Only in STD outpatient department are female patients willing to tell freely about such disordersof theirs. In our clinical practice,we realize that women as well as men are eager to know more about their sexual health.Itfollows that clinicians and the society should attach great importance to the systematic study of STD-caused sexual dysfunction, especially in females.
