Objective:To study the sex differences in EEG response to photic driving in normal young adults, and to explore the effects of photic stimulation on visual system. Methods: A routine EEG was recorded in 35 male normal subjects and 33 female ones at the age of 21~25 years old,and then photic stimulation was given. The frequencies of photic stimulation were 5?10 and 15Hz.The power values of EEG in resting state and photic stimulation were changed into wave amplitudes, and then the EEG amplitudes of male group was compared with those of female group. Results:In resting state,EEG showed a higher amplitude in β 1 and β 2 band at the limited electrode sites in females than in males. There was no significant difference in δ?θ?α 1 and α 2 band. The amplitude difference in the beta band corresponding to photic stimulation at 15Hz was more significant during photic stimulation.A significant difference was noted in all sites. Conclusions:Sex differences might exist in the function of visual system, and females might have higher susceptibility to photic stimulation than males.
