A Comparison of the Influence on China's Society by the Returned Students from the U. S. and Japan in the Modern Times

近代留美生和留日生是近代中国留学生中的主力,他们对中国的近代化进程起了极大的推动作用,但留学走向的不同,也造成了他们在中国近代化进程中起作用的主要领域不尽相同。一般而言,留美生侧重于科技领域,留日生侧重于政治领域。形成这种现象的主要原因,在于留学背景的不同以及留学生对留学所在国的观感不同。

The returned students from the U. S. and Japan make up the main force of students who had studied abroad. They play a very important role in the furtherance of China's modernization. However, the main fields they influence vary with the different countries they studied in. In general, the returned students from the U. S. lay particular emphasis on the field of science and technology; while those from Japan lay particular emphasis on the field of politics. The chief reason for such a difference lies in the different studying backgrounds and the different impressions of the returned students from the U. S. and Japan.
