Thomas Hardy was one of the Western writers who had mos t influence on the poetic creation of Xu Zhi-mo (once translated as Xu Zhi-mo),and the latter benefited a great deal from the essence of Hardy's poerns. One major questionable point in Xu Zhi -mo's poetic career would not be decoded, the author believes, without referenc e to his admiration and occasional imitation of Thomas Hardy. That is the problem of his surprisingly profound melancholy, which can be traced in all his four volumes of collected verses imbued with bold imaginat ions, talented thoughts and passionate emotions. Xu Zhi-mo came up with the concept of `a farce in real life' based on Hardy' s metaphor to compare life to `a show'. For this reason the dissertation intendsto probe into the connections of Xu Zhi-mo and Thomas Hardy through their separa te descriptions of life, ideas of love, pursuits of the involvement in the real world and differences in comedy and tragedy.
