The thesis focuses on two pieces of artwork. One is titled Seven-Character Poem in Running Script(Xíng Shū Wǔ Yán Shī) in hanging scroll attributed to Zhao Mengfu in the collection of Xinxiang Museum, Henan Province, whose inscription is studied to be actually the manuscript of the Ming calligrapher Jin Cong by his typical style of elegant and delicate brushstrokes, the coherence and arrangement, manner and rhythm. The other is the ink painting named Red Mountains and Vast Ocean(Dān Shān Yíng Hǎi Tú) in scroll collected in Shanghai Museum, which pictures the red mountains and waters in the Siming Mountain valley. Judging from the landforms and artistic style as well as his life activities of that time, the painting is Wang Meng’s early work created at his middle age when he was living a secluded life in Huzhou and Ningbo.
