A complete map of James Holmes' translation studies

1972年霍尔姆斯构建了翻译研究学科构架,为翻译研究成为独立学科提供了理论依据。1995年图里将霍氏构架制成"地图",对直观传播霍氏学科思想、推动学科发展产生了积极影响。但图里地图还有严重不足,它简化了霍氏构架的层次,误构了某些分支的关系,忽视了某些分支研究的最终目标,甚至遮蔽了"翻译研究之研究"分支的存在,不利于全面了解霍氏构架全貌。本文依据霍氏原文,重新制作了霍氏构架图,试图通过增补层次、理清关系、呈现某些分支的研究目标、补充"翻译研究之研究"等分支,完整再现霍氏构架思想,以便更客观地评价霍氏构架的历史贡献和学术价值。

In 1972 James Holmes designed a structure of translation studies and provided the theoretical basis for the discipline to move towards independency.Later in 1995 Gideon Toury made out of it "Holmes'‘map'of translation studies", which has played a positive role in visualizing Holmes'design and propelling the development of the discipline.However,Toury's "map"has some deficiencies with several lower-order classifications omitted,the relationship between some branches misconnected,the ultimate goals of some branches excluded,and even such important branch as "study of translation studies" neglected.Such a misshaped map has hindered a full understanding of Holmes'design.The paper makes a more complete and accurate ‘map'of Holmes'translation studies with a closer reference to his 1972 paper.The new map,by correcting the deficiencies of Toury's map through readjusting the relationships between branches and adding the lower-order classifications,the goals of the three branches of DTS,and especially the "study of translation studies"branch,gives a thorough representation of Holmes'thought on the disciplinary structure and should help judge more objectively the historical contribution and academic value that Holmes'design deserves.
