An Interpretation of Inherited Textual Signifyin(g) of Sula to Mrs. Dalloway

弗吉尼亚·伍尔夫笔下的《达洛维夫人》和托妮·莫里森创作的《秀拉》同为两部有关女性的经典作品,对后世女性作品影响深远。本文运用非裔美国评论家小亨利·路易·盖茨的喻指理论,从《秀拉》对《达洛维夫人》的继承性喻指出发,分析了其文本喻指的基础,即对女性自我和女性友谊的继承性喻指。一方面反映了伍尔夫关于女性自身及女性友谊,在女性自我寻找过程中发挥不可替代作用的思想对莫里森的深刻影响,另一方面也体现了莫里森对伍尔夫在女性自我寻找主题上的继承与延续。

Mrs.Dalloway written by Virginia Woolf and Sula by Toni Morrison,both of which are classic female novels,have a profound influence on the works of the later generation.From the perspective of inherited textual Signifyin(g),this essay analyses the bases of textual Signifyin (g):signifyin (g)on female self and female friendship,by employing the theory of Signifyin(g)constructed by Henry Louis Gates,Jr.On the one hand,it reflects that Woolf's thought has exerted a deep impact on Morrison that female self and female friendship play an irreplaceable role in their quest for self;Morrison's inheritance and development of the theme of female quest for self from Woolf are presented on the other hand.
