A Pragma-Translatological Approach to “ban A ban B” Constructions

在分析"半A半B"构式的结构、语义、句法和语用方面的特点,并梳理"半"字翻译研究的基础上,阐述了四字格习语翻译的语用翻译方法,认为要根据四种不同的情形选择突出语义性和语用性的无"虐暴"或仅有"软暴"的译法。同时通过中英平行语料库收集经典名著《红楼梦》和《西游记》的全部"半A半B"构式例子,对比其不同的英译法,揭示了各译者和译本在实际翻译中的深层差异。

This paper expounds the pragma-translatological approach to Chinese four-character idioms by analyzing the Chinese "ban A ban B"construction from perspectives of structure,meaning,syntactic and pragmatic attributes,and reviewing previous studies of translation of the word "ban (half)".It is contended that the translator should figure out the status condition of each "ban A ban B"construct (ion)and find a rendering solution that stays away from "violence"--"abusive violence"if not "gentle violence",namely a solution that respects the semanticity and pragmaticity of the construct(ion)itself.By collecting all "ban A ban B"construct(ion)s with translation(s)in the parallel C-E corpus of two Chinse great classics (The Story of the Stone and All Men Are Brothers),the translation differences are studied contrastively,with spe- cial reference to the factors that underlie the actual approaches of the translators and their versions.
