Both William Faulkner and Oe Kenzaburo’s novels concerned the theme of identity, reflecting modern people’s anxiety and the desire to escape their own identity and reality after being tortured by the war and transformation of society. The purpose of their writing is to help people in modern society achieve selfredemption and obtain the self-awareness of their own identity. This paper focuses on the comparison and contrast between the protagonists’ journey of denying and pursuing their respective identity in Faulkner’s Light in August and Oe’s Personal Matter, aimed to explore the connotation of works of the two Nobel Prize winners from different cultures and understand the orientation and moral values of Nobel Prize for Literature.
