Based on the six years I lived in Beijing,I know one thing is true:Chinese people love arts and many parents want their children to learn at least one of the classics,whether it's music,calligraphy1 or drawing.I witnessed this firsthand when I went to see the house orchestra play at the National Center for the Performing Arts in central Beijing.2 The majority of the audience was made up of parents and young children.
