For students to be well served, teaching must become a real profession. In this connection, teacher performance assessments offer an important alternative. By evaluating teaching authentically, these assessments represent the complexity of teaching and offer standards that can define an expert profession. Teacher performance assessment is a critical strategy to develop teachers’ expertise and improve the quality of teacher candidates. Ed TPA is the first recognized assessment system in the United States for teacher candidates. The research and implement of edTPA aim at developing teaching as a real formal profession, leading and promoting the training and development of teachers. Practice has shown that edTPA actually promotes practice of teaching and encourages teachers to pay more attention on students’ learning. The best hope for significantly improving education at all levels is for educators to take charge of accountability and ensure it reflects our highest aspirations for ourselves and our profession.
