In depiction of how Beaux-Arts architectural composition works in a design project,this article clarifies its title in a literal sense. In comparison with that in France, it then describes the changing role of Beaux-Arts composition in architectural education and profession at the United States, aiming to point out the relationship between the composition method and institutional system as well as the focus of profession. It thus analyzes its scope of application and limitation, so as to clarifies the title in a deeper sense. Finally, taking the plan for Canberra as an example, the article dwells on the worldwide spread and transformation of the Beaux-Arts architectural composition, triggering a second thought on its practice in China.
