Eddie Huang's Dining Space and Subjective Identity Construction in the Fresh Off the Boat: A Memoir

从食物、空间、身份三者关系建构的角度分析了美籍台湾华裔Eddie Huang于2013年出版的自传体小说《初来乍到:回忆录》。在作品中,Eddie的餐饮空间发生了三次重大变换,而这些变换展现出作者对于其中国身份的认知、怀疑与确证的一个过程。借由Eddie的案例我们得以窥见在全球化语境下的文化碰撞与交流的复杂性,而餐饮空间在其中占有一个重要的位置。它一方面塑造了人们对于自身主体身份的认同,而另一方面通过对餐饮空间有意识的选择人们在某种程度上也进行着对其主体身份的建构。

This paper analyzes Eddie Huang’s autobiographical novel, the Fresh Off the Boat:A Memoir, published in 2013, from the perspective of the relationship among food, space and identity. Eddie’s dining space undergoes three major transformations, which reveal the author’s perception, suspicion and confirmation of his Chinese identity. From the case of Eddie, we can see the complexity of cultural collision and communication in the context of globalization, in which dining space occupies an important position. On the one hand, it shapes people’s identification with their subjective identity, and on the other hand, through the conscious choice of dining space, people also construct their subjective identity to some degree.
