During the Second World War, Ukrainian nationalists launched the "Volyn Massacre" against Polish civilians in the Western Ukraine. Although Poland and Ukraine have established close political and economic ties on the basis of common strategic interests since 1991, yet these two countries have conflicting historical memories and narratives regarding the "Volyn Massacre". Since the Ukrainian crisis, these conflicts have intensified with the development of respective domestic political and social situation in both countries. In addition, coupled with Poland’s potential territorial claims of the western part of Ukraine, the relationship between these two countries has deteriorated significantly. Against the backdrop of the current situation, the reconciliation between Poland and Ukraine on historical memory conflicts will be extremely difficult.
