The story of hunter Gracchus by Franz Kafka is represented in each chapter of W. G. Sebald’s Vertigo. Through his revision of the hunter story, Sebald depicts the existential predicament in which modern men suffer the pervasive vertigo. The dizziness manifests itself through the imagery of drifting boats, the ubiquitous uncanny Doppelg?nger and endless wanderings in the text. Sebald attributes such vertigo to the fear and despair of individuals, who are exposed to the contingencies of this world and the difficulties of memory. Through the hunter’s death, he discards the "erotic-salvific model" in romantic tradition and turns to writing per se, a Sebaldian way of redemption. Concentrated on memory and intertextuality, Sebald’s redemption narrative has its own dilemma: the potential salvation that lies deeply in vertigo is also the very cause of vertigo.
