Misreading of Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture in English Versions of Record of a Journey to the West

以《西游记》的两个英文全译本为研究对象,从中医学基本概念、中医疾病诊断与证候、中药等方面举例分析,探讨了詹纳尔、余国蕃对中医药文化翻译的得失,并尝试修正其中的文化误译,以期引起典籍翻译爱好者及研究人员对《西游记》中的中医药文化的重视,为这部经典著作的英译提供参考。

This paper selects the Record of a Journey to the West complete English versions of Jenner and YU Guo-fan, to discuss the gains and losses of the two translators in TCM culture translation from the perspective of basic TCM theory, diagnosis and symptoms as well as Chinese medicine, and also tries to put forward some suggestions for the revision of the translation. This study aims to arouse the classics translation researchers’ interest in the TCM culture of Record of a Journey to the West, and provide references for the retranslation of this great Chinese literary work.
