Unreliable narration has become one of the central topics of James Phelan’s rhetorical narratology. It intends to display the author’s intention and narrator’s perception from different perspectives by employing a variety of artistic skills, and reconstruct the multiple meaning of narrative text at the same time.Unreliable narration directly affects readers’multiple reaction, attaches great importance to reader’s ethical value, finally enhances the narrative effect of the text.In the light of the Phelan’s unreliable narration strategy, this paper analyzes a number of African-American classics,in which there is still cruel racial and gender discrimination, which made black population suffer from misery and mental trauma, even after the abolition of the slavery.Through the exploration of the black pursuing love,freedom,self-development and equality, the reader glorifies the mutual love between various nationality and the harmonious voice of the post-racialism conveyed by the works. At the same time, researchers also focus on the cultural representations of the novels and analyze the cultural context and intertextuality characteristics of each text.Furthermore, the study expends and highlights the important practical significance of African-American novels in promoting the development of social progress.
