Jackie Kay,the current Scots Makar, challenges the traditional concept of Scottishness through her poetic representation of Black Scottish experiences.Depicting the cultural differences between Scotland and England,Kay effectively defends the Scottish tradition against the overwhelming English tradition by outlining the importance of Scottish language and Scottish cultural heritage.Kay’s poetic works, embedded with autobiographical elements and dramatic monologues, record her experiences of racism, address the issue of black Scottishness in Scottish society, and reveal the fluidity and diversity of Scottishness in the contemporary world. Her thought-provoking reflections on Scottish identity make her a unique poetic voice for contemporary Scotland.
