Of the earth’s three major ecosystems, wetlands are called the "kidneys of the earth" because of their unique ecological structure and purification. However, as an international city, Macao’s urban development model is not in line with its own positioning, resulting in excessive population density. The long-term disordered land reclamation and development mode has damaged the wetland ecosystem of Macao and caused the deterioration of the environment of Macao residential area. Based on the investigation and analysis of the problems in the residential area, the author hopes to apply and guide the research on the sustainable development of the residential area in Macao through the theory and research results of functional wetlands, build the harmonious coexistence of wetlands and human settlements, and achieve the goal of building the sustainable development of the residential area in Macao.
