On China's Opening-up,Modernization and Urban Development

就中国城市的近代遭际而言,开放与发展互为条件,彼此影响。特定的政治与社会情境,决定了中国城市开放与发展的被动性与依附性,在此过程中,国人思想与行为的应变性不断演进。开放与发展虽然促进了中国城市近代化的进程,也促进了城市的物质生产和制度建设,城市结构和城市空间变化明显。但中西不平等发展的趋势日益扩大,城市特质改变带来的中国主权与治权被破坏,社会欺诈的发生,城乡差距拉大,犯罪率增加等社会问题不断加剧,由此皆在形塑着中国城市近代化的曲折道路。

In the recent setting of urban China, opening-up and development have been mutual conditions and mutual influences. The specific political and social context determines the passiveness and dependence of its opening-up and development. In the process, the contingency of thoughts and behaviors of Chinese people is constantly evolving. The urbanization and modernization promote the material production and systematic construction, and the significant changes in urban structure and urban space in China. However, with a growing trend of development inequality between China and the West, the Chinese are experiencing the uncertainty and concerns of damaged sovereignty and ruling power, together with a variety of social problems, including increased social fraud and crime rate, and widening gap between urban and rural areas. Thus it shapes the tortuous path of modernization followed by urban China.
