This article takes the opportunity of the "Art in Open Space – The 50th Anniversary of Public Art in New York" at the New York City Museum to analyze the reasons for the booming public art in New York City. With mutual support from legal policies, funding and sponsorship, artists have been able to boldly use various media and resources to bring their works into open spaces and public spaces, breaking the space constraints of museums and art galleries. The public has changed from a passive appreciator to a participant in public art. Not only can they participate in the creation of the work, but they can also express their opinions and decide whether the work is retained.
