Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease caused by multiple genetic and environmental factors. The relationship between diabetes mellitus and genes becomes more prominent during the advancement of molecular biology. It is well known that dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase(DDAH)is the main enzyme for asymmetric dimethylarginine(ADMA)in human body. In recent years,a large number of studies have confirmed that DDAH gene polymorphism affects ADMA expression, and it is associated with endothelial dysfunction, which is an important cause of diabetes mellitus and its vascular complications. So,it is suggested that DDAH polymorphism could be used as a predictor for diabetes mellitus risk. Here,we reviewed the association between DDAH gene polymorphism and diabetes mellitus and its vascular complications.
