Objective:To analysis various contributing factors to hypertension related target organ damage (TOD).Methods:Intra-arterial blood pressure (BP) was continuously recorded for 24h in freely moving spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHR) by a micro-computer system. On-line and off-line computer analysis of the BP curve allowed calculation of systolic(SBP), diastolic (DBP) blood pressure and blood pressure variability. The rats could be divided into two groups:'dippers'and 'non-dippers'. The relationship between variability and circadian profile of blood pressure and TOD was studied in SHR.Results:SBP,DBP and their variabilities were all significantly correlated to TOD, while the variabilities of SBP and DBP were correlated to TOD more significantly than average value of SBP or DBP.The TOD induced by hypertension was more severe in 'non-dippers'than in 'dippers'.Conclusions:Variability and circadian profile of blood pressure are important factors contribute to TOD.
