Heredity of hybrid sterility in distant crosses of cultivated rices was assesscd. The same gcne systom coutd exist to control storility of intersubspecific and inter-specific hybrids It was discussed for approaches to overcome reproductive barriers in hybridization breeding involving distant crosses like Idica—Japonica crosses and O.sativa-O.glaberrima crosses Evidence was presented showing that there was a new gene(ds) linked to S-5 locus Non-allelic interaction botwecn S-5 and ds could confer harmonious parformances of fertiliy and chiasma frequency.
