The paper discusses the decisions on research and development on the progress of production of firms in oligopoly market. The paper analyzes the firms′ decision on the investment in R&D to lower their costs of production in the model of Gournot duopoly. The results of R&D decision in cooperation and noncoopration respectively are discussed. The result shows that the R&D investment decreases along with the spill out effect enlarges and increases along with the patent duration prolongs when each firm makes R&D separately.
