东汉后期,由于朝政腐败,封建统治岌岌可危,满怀报国热情的清流士人为了挽救封建统治的危机而作出了种种努力,但东汉王朝无可避免的没落让他们的希望化为了泡影。所以这一时期的清流士人欲进不忍,欲退不能,陷入了迷茫、痛苦和无奈的矛盾心境中。

The scholars aloof from politics and material pursuits was filled with enthusiasm that dedicated themselves to the service of the country and they made every effort to save the crises, but their hope vanished like soap bubbles because of the inevitable decline of the dynasty. So the scholars aloof from politics and material pursuits during this period were at a loss and fell into the state of conflicting, suffering and contradictory mentality. .
